After learning English during the day, it is always nice to take part in some of our after school activities. Our English school organises a large variety of school and evening
activities for our students, such as sports, concerts, and
barbecues, visits to other towns and cities in the Bay of Plenty. Details of these activities for the week are put
on the common room noticeboard and in the Thursday notices.
These activities are a great way for you to have fun, get
to know the other students, learn more English and find out
about life around Rotorua and in New Zealand!
These are just some of the activities
we plan to hold in the coming months. All of them are
subject to numbers and weather conditions. |
February 2010
Lakes Tour
New Zealand has a lot of beautiful lakes. During this month you can enjoy a scenic drive around a few of the lakes that surround Rotorua. First we will stop off at the Blue Lake, this is a great photo opportunity, past the green lake, onto Lake Tarawera for another photo stop and if there is time, a drive past Lake Okareka.
Rotorua Museum of Art & History
Here you will discover great stories of the Rotorua region. Learn about our unique geological origins, and view historical treasures entrusted to the museum.
Football
Students don’t need to be good players to enjoy this activity! A game of football after school is a great way to meet other students and have fun.
Agrojet & Sausage Sizzle
New Zealand is reknown for it's thrills and exciting activities. After learning lots of English during your morning class you can come for a good old kiwi sausage sizzle and ride on New Zealand’s fastest jet sprint boat. This promises to be a fun filled afternoon!
Baking
Join in this after school activity and learn to bake biscuits, slices, pancakes, scones or muffins. This is a great way to practice your English speaking and meet other students

Ten Pin Bowling
Come and have a game of Ten Pin Bowling. This a great opportunity to meet other students and have lots of fun.
Redwoods Walk
The Whakarewarewa forest is one of Rotorua’s most spectacular natural assets. Come along and experience some of the finest walking tracks in the world here!
Polynesian Spa
Relax in the soothing thermal water of Rotorua’s Polynesian spa. This is great way to wind down at the end of the school week!
Horse Riding
Come horse riding. This is a great opportunity for you to see lovely farm scenery and if you have never ridden before these horses will be perfect for you.

Archery/Laser Clay Target Shooting
Try the thrill and excitement of shooting without the danger of bullets with laser target shooting. And a medieval game of archery with high performance compound bows (a modern version of Robin Hood bows).
Blue Lake Walk
Come for a stroll around Rotorua’s Beautiful Lake Tiki Tapu or otherwise known as The Blue Lake. This is an easy walk with many fabulous photo opportunities!
Cooking
Baking with Graham is always a fun activity! This is a great opportunity to try some favourite New Zealand recipes, practice your English speaking and meet other students.
Badminton
Come for a game of badminton after school. RELA has the racquets and shuttlecocks. There’s no need to be an experienced player, this is strictly for fun!
Tirau Market
This country style market is held on the third Sunday of each month. There is quality produce, art, craft, and pottery. This small town also has lots of interesting shops to look in. There is a clock shop, an all year round Christmas shop, a delicious sweet shop, and some very nice art & souvenir shops, as well as some lovely cafés for you to relax in after you have looked around.

Te Waihou Walk
This beautiful walk along the Te Waihou River offers stunning scenery and magnificent colours in its natural beauty! This is a must do walk!
Paintball action
This month we are taking part in the ultimate paintball experience. This is a game where the players are put into teams to compete against each other armed with a special paintball gun. Make sure you bring old clothes for this activity.
Skyline Skyrides
Come and experience the famous Skyline Gondola & Luge. Always a popular activity and fun filled afternoon.
Tamaki Maori Village Tour
Be welcomed into Tamaki Maori Village in a traditional manner, experience the richness of the Maori culture and enjoy a delicious hangi dinner.
Taupo
Come for a day trip to the beautiful town of Taupo which is situated in the BOP. While you are there you can shop, walk around some of the Lake, visit the museum and have lunch in one of the many cafés or sit at the park and enjoy a picnic with the other students.

ZORB
Experience the thrill of the world famous ZORB! After this activity there is usually time to stop off at one of Rotorua’s popular ice cream shops of an afternoon treat!
Basketball
Come and have a game of basketball. This is a great opportunity to meet other students and enjoy some sports at RELA.
Paradise Valley Springs
This month we will visit Rotorua’s very own wildlife park. Discover the pride of paradise–the African lion pride; see New Zealand trout, native birds, friendly farm animals and much more.

Mount Maunganui
Come for a drive to the beautiful beach side town of Mount Maunganui which is situated in the BOP. Choose to walk up or around the Mount, swim in the wonderful salt water hot pools, shop and have lunch at one of the many wonderful cafes.
Rotorua has many different scenic walks to do; they are all beautiful and some
are longer than others. We usually have a keen group of walkers
at RELA so we try to do a variety of walks throughout the month
for our students.
Sports can be quite popular at RELA
also. We like to have different games throughout the month.
Over the road we play soccer and
volleyball. In the RELA grounds there are swingball, table tennis,
badminton and
tennis racquets available.
