Mother and Child

Mother and Child Package

RELA is pleased to be able to offer a Mother and Child Package. This is for those parents who would like to come and study some English with us while their child studies at a local primary school, pre-school or at RELA.

Children wishing to study at a local school:
If the child/children would like to study at a local Primary school the minimum length of stay is 4 weeks. This is because a child needs at least 1 - 2 weeks to settle into the Primary school, and they cannot gain very much in a short stay. The school we work with will only accept 6 students at any one time. This means that we will not be able to confirm a place at the Primary school until the enrolment has been received.

If a mother wants to come for a shorter time, we can talk about having the child here at RELA or at a daycare. We can only accept children aged under 12 to study at RELA in July, August, December and January.

Please note: The mother must study at RELA for the entire time their child is here. If the child chooses to study at Primary school, they will need to apply for a student visa before coming to New Zealand. The mother may also need to get a guardian visa. (see "Extra Information" below)

Includes:

  • All administration costs and homestay placement fees
  • Homestay accommodation with all meals provided for the duration of the course(motel accommodation also available at an extra cost)

Yuka spends her day in the childcare centre. Here she is making friends with Taylor, who is introducing her to some Kiwi wildlife!

    At the same time......

......her mum Kikumi (front row, right) is learning English and making friends at RELA!
Kikumi said: "My first study-abroad experience with my daughter turned out to be just wonderful. It was only a 10-day stay. Yuka went to a childcare and I went to RELA, immersed with English only. We truly enjoyed the time with the homestay family as well. This experience was quite an adventure .... we had a great time there."

    January 2009

While in New Zealand on holiday, the Mello family decided to study English at RELA.

Arthur, Claudia and their children Thais, Bruno and Sofia, spent six weeks studying at the school doing a combination of English with activities and full time English.

    Claudia Mello's comment:
We were very happy especially because our children were very happy to study English and all teachers were patient with them. We chose to study at RELA because this is the school that found a course for children and parents.
    This is a great idea!

    Extra Information

The New Zealand Government has introduced rules to help keep international students safe while they study in our country. These rules mean that some students who enrol on our Mother and Child programme will need to get a student visa before coming to New Zealand.

    • Any students studying in a New Zealand Primary, Intermediate or High School must have a student visa no matter how long they are studying for. This means that any child who comes on the Mother and Child Programme and who joins a primary school will need to apply for a student visa in their home country. All the necessary arrangements will need to be made at least two months in advance. The fees will need to be paid and the primary school will need to issue a receipt and an offer of place. We will not be able to accept any last minute enrolments and the visa will need to be issued before leaving for New Zealand.

    • The students will only be able to enrol at a school which is a signatory to the Code of Practice. Most of the primary schools in Rotorua are signatories.

    • Any student who is aged 10 and under must be accompanied by a mother or father. They cannot be here on their own or with a grandparent, aunt or uncle. The parent needs to come on a Guardian Visa. This also means that they need to apply for a visa in their home country, and have it issued before arriving in New Zealand. The parent can study on a Guardian Visa but only between the hours of 9.30am and 2.00pm. However, we are happy to have them start in class as soon as the child is settled in their own class.

    • From our experience having young students aged 5 and 6 in primary school does not work. It is too traumatic for them and they do not cope at all well. They are much better at a daycare.

    • Daycares do not have the same restrictions with visas. A student can come and study on a visitor visa and the mother can also study on a visitor visa at RELA. However, the daycare would need a month's notice. There would also be a limit to the number of students they could have.

    • The students can study at RELA on a visitor visa. The mothers can also study on a visitor visa. There will be no need to apply for visas in advance. We could accept bookings at short notice. However, the students may be taught on a one-to-one basis, or be in a very small class with other students from the same country.
